Overview
Session Nine opens in the uncertain
silence that follows an act none of the party can fully explain away: the
restoration of Michael Adeyemi’s mind.
Only moments earlier, Michael had
been returned to himself after existing for weeks in a diminished, childlike
state. The recovery is not triumphant. It is violent in a quieter way. He
recoils from the party, terrified and disoriented, staring at strangers in a
world he no longer understands. Like the others after the crash, Michael has
awakened into a reality that moved on without him. The group recognizes the
look immediately: the shock of surviving one catastrophe only to emerge into
another.
They give him space, but they do not
leave.
Outside his room, Lucien Moreau
greets the party with overwhelming gratitude. To him, what they have done for
Michael is nothing less than miraculous. That gratitude, however, quickly gives
way to questions—about the Veil, about the Clausius engine operating on the
grounds, and about the faction occupying the maintenance sector.
What begins as a debrief becomes
something much larger.
Over the course of the session, the party
learns that the Veil has transformed from a private counseling campus into a
self-sustaining enclave for the abandoned, the altered, and the displaced. They
also uncover evidence that the Veil was never as innocent as it appeared, even
before the storm. Hidden records reveal ghost patients, covert funding,
parole-linked residents, and old federal ties. The campus is not just fractured
in the present. It was built over fractures from the beginning.
At the same time, tension within the
team reaches a breaking point. Rana Al-Masri openly challenges Tariq Mansour
over his powers, his actions, and the possibility that he is either an
unwilling conduit for the Master—or the Master himself in some divided,
concealed, or incomplete form. For the first time, the group is forced to look
directly at the possibility that their memories, their mission, and even their
unity may have been manipulated from the start.
By session’s end, the party has done
more than expose a criminal enterprise. They have shattered Kareem Haddad’s
relic-processing operation, seized a cache of stolen magical artifacts,
uncovered signs of a buried chamber beneath the Veil, and driven Kareem’s
people from the maintenance sector.
But they do not leave with
certainty.
They leave with evidence, spoils,
and a dangerous new truth:
The enemy outside the group is real.
The enemy inside the group might be real too.

1.
Michael Adeyemi Returns to Himself
The session begins immediately after
Michael Adeyemi’s mental faculties are restored.
The effect is not relief but
rupture. Michael jerks away from the party, wild-eyed and overwhelmed, trying
to understand where he is, who these people are, and how the world around him
has changed. His mind has been returned all at once after prolonged
suppression, and the flood of restored awareness is too much to process in the
moment.

The group quickly recognizes that pressing him for answers would be cruel and counterproductive. Michael needs time—not isolation, but space. They withdraw into the hall, agreeing to remain nearby until he is ready to speak.
That decision becomes the emotional
frame for the rest of the session: everything the party does over the next
several hours happens while Michael recovers somewhere just out of reach, a
newly awakened witness whose existence may change the entire campaign.
2.
Lucien Moreau Explains What the Veil Has Become
Outside Michael’s room, the party
speaks at length with Lucien Moreau.
Lucien confirms that the Veil no
longer functions as a hospital or treatment center in any traditional sense.
After the Alexandrian Storm, the staff and institutional leadership either
disappeared, fled, or never returned. Those who remained behind—former patients
and a handful of others—were forced to improvise a new way of living.
Over time, the Veil evolved into a
fragile cooperative community.
Lucien resists the idea that he
rules anyone, but it is immediately clear that he has become the closest thing
the campus has to a civic center. Residents look to him for guidance, conflict
mediation, and stability. He describes the Veil not as an institution, but as a
place where abandoned people learned to survive together when no one else came.
He also clarifies what the Veil was
even before the storm. It was never a conventional hospital. Most people came
there voluntarily for grief counseling, trauma recovery, addiction treatment,
emotional exhaustion, or psychological retreat. It was a campus for repair
rather than confinement.
That distinction matters.
The Veil was always meant to be a
place where damaged people rebuilt their lives. After the storm, it became a
place where damaged people were forced to rebuild society.
Lucien also explains how the
community survives. Residents prepare what food they can from scavenged and
pooled resources, and in the last few weeks limited outside deliveries have
begun to resume as infrastructure slowly returns. The Veil is not prosperous,
but it is no longer in immediate collapse.
Tariq, moved by both Lucien’s
sincerity and the condition of the residents, quietly begins arranging outside
aid: food, water, medicine, computer equipment, and basic support personnel.
Those deliveries are set in motion to begin the following day.
3.
The Maintenance Sector and Kareem Haddad’s Claim
The discussion shifts to the
Clausius engine operating somewhere on the grounds.
At the mere mention of it, Lucien’s
expression changes.
He explains that the engine is
housed in the old maintenance bay near the service gate—the entire left side of
the campus. That area is under the control of Kareem Haddad and his associates,
and no one from Lucien’s side is allowed inside.
Lucien does not know exactly what
Kareem’s people are doing there, but he knows enough to be worried. Equipment
moves in and out constantly. Trucks arrive. Trucks depart. Cargo is stored,
sorted, and shipped. The operation appears structured, secretive, and beyond
anything the Veil’s residents would need for ordinary maintenance.
Lucien suspects Kareem has built a
criminal enterprise within the campus.
He also reveals that Kareem may have
originally been sent to the Veil as part of a legal or parole arrangement
before the storm, though Lucien never knew him well at the time. After the
storm, when the staff vanished and the campus collapsed into improvisation,
Kareem carved out his own territory and held it.
The Veil is now divided into two
uneasy spheres:
- Lucien’s side
— a survivor community built on cooperation and mutual support
- Kareem’s side
— a heavily guarded maintenance sector powered by a Clausius engine and
sustained by secrecy
The two halves coexist, but only just.
4. Lucien Moreau’s Aura
Before the party moves on, an important detail surfaces—this time not about Tariq, but about Lucien himself.
As introductions are made, a subtle but unmistakable effect spreads through part of the group. Several members feel a sudden shift in mood: confidence rises, emotional clarity sharpens, and a deep sense of validation settles in. The act of saving Michael feels profound—perhaps the most meaningful thing they have accomplished.
The sensation is not intrusive. It does not overwrite thought or compel action.
Instead, it enhances what is already there.
Those affected recognize the feeling. It mirrors a prior encounter with a British operative whose presence carried a similar effect—an aura that amplifies emotional states rather than controlling them. The experience is powerful, but not alien.
The source becomes clear. This is not Tariq. This is Lucien Moreau.
Lucien’s presence carries a natural, passive influence—one that steadies people, elevates morale, and reinforces conviction. It helps explain how he has held the Veil together despite limited resources and growing tension. His leadership is not enforced.
It is felt. At the same time, the moment quietly reinforces a larger truth the party can no longer ignore:
They are surrounded by individuals whose very presence can shape perception.
Not all influence is hostile.
Not all power is obvious.
But all of it matters.
And the line between inspiration and manipulation is becoming harder to define.
5.
Questions About Michael, Elena, and the Missing Threads
As the conversation deepens, Lucien
reveals another disturbing detail.
For a brief period after the storm,
another individual had been at the Veil in a condition somewhat similar to
Michael’s: a beautiful woman with Slavic features, non-Egyptian, occasionally
glowing hands, and an unstable demeanor. She was there for roughly two weeks,
then disappeared.
When Tariq pushes deeper—using his
powers to pull an image from Lucien’s surface memory—the woman is identified as
Elena Petrova, the Russian physicist listed on the flight manifest
beneath Michael Adeyemi.
That revelation changes everything.
Michael was not the only crash
survivor hidden at the Veil. Elena was here too.
And if she was here, then someone
was using the Veil as a holding site.
The implication hangs over the party
immediately: Michael and Elena may not have simply been “left” here after the
storm. They may have been placed here deliberately until needed.
6.
The Debate Over Michael’s Safety
The party returns to the immediate
question of what to do about Michael Adeyemi.
Yusuf argues that they should give
Michael time to recover and let him approach them when ready. Rana pushes back
hard. In her view, restoring Michael’s identity only to walk away from him
would be irresponsible. The group eventually agrees on a compromise:
They will stay at the Veil.
They will give Michael space.
But they will not leave without speaking with him again.
That decision becomes more urgent
later, once Rana begins to believe that simply allowing Tariq near Michael may
place him in danger.
7.
Rana Searches the Veil’s Records
While Michael recovers, the party
spreads out to investigate the campus.
Rana heads to the administrative
pavilion in search of records related to Michael, Elena, and any other
residents of interest. Thanks to the restored Clausius infrastructure, the
office computers function—but most pre-storm digital records are gone. What
remains are filing cabinets packed with paper documents, transfer forms,
emergency records, and intake paperwork.
Using her accelerated processing and boosted efficiency, Rana combs through the material at impossible speed.

What she finds redefines the Veil.
Michael
Adeyemi’s File
Michael was transferred from Nakata
Hospital under a vague recommendation for rest, recovery, and psychiatric
assistance. No clear diagnosis was attached. No personal identity was
preserved. The paperwork looks bureaucratic and impersonal rather than overtly
sinister, but it confirms that Michael did not arrive at the Veil by accident.
Elias
Ward’s File
Elias Ward, the artist on the
grounds, was present before the storm. More importantly, his records contain
two FBI contacts listed as emergency references to be notified if anyone came
looking for him. That strongly implies some form of federal interest,
surveillance, or protective arrangement.
Kareem
Haddad’s File
Kareem’s emergency contact is a
parole officer, confirming Lucien’s suspicion that Haddad’s original presence
at the Veil was tied to legal supervision.
Hidden
Receipts
Rana also finds two old-fashioned
carbon-copy receipts, half-buried in unrelated paperwork:
- 50,000 Egyptian pounds each
- One marked Exchange
- One marked Leasing Agreement
- Dated in early April and two days before the storm
These payments are significant not
only for their value, but for the way they are hidden. They suggest off-book
arrangements, access deals, or a quiet transfer of control related to the
facility shortly before everything changed.

The Veil’s Secret Before the Storm
As Rana continues searching, an even
darker pattern emerges.
Many “patients” in the Veil’s older
records appear to be false entries.
Short stays. Single names. Contradictory symptoms. Overpayments.
Minimal physical presence. No meaningful follow-up.
The conclusion becomes hard to
avoid: the Veil was servicing ghost patients long before the storm.
These fabricated or semi-fabricated
residents likely existed to:
- Create cover identities
- Establish alibis
- Conceal movement
- Provide legal or bureaucratic shelter for people who
needed to disappear temporarily
The Veil was not only a therapeutic
retreat.
It was also, at least in part, a
veil in the literal sense—a place where people could hide in plain sight.
That discovery explains why so many
staff never returned after the storm. Some were likely incapacitated. Others
had already made enough money from this covert side operation to vanish the
moment the structure collapsed.
The Veil’s present instability is
not an aberration. It is built over an older system of quiet deception.
9.
Yusuf Probes the Maintenance Sector
While Rana works through the
records, Yusuf tests the maintenance bay with X-ray vision.
He can see through the surrounding
walls—but the moment his senses touch the Clausius engine itself, the energy
output becomes overwhelming. The power source is immense, far stronger than
anything needed for ordinary building upkeep.
This confirms that the maintenance
sector is not running a generator.
It is powering an entire operation.
It also reinforces the geographical
split on campus:
- the right side organized around Lucien and the
long-term residents
- the left side organized around Kareem, the engine, and
a fortified criminal workflow
The Veil is not merely divided
politically. It is physically partitioned into two competing systems.
10.
Strategic Debate: What Is the Objective?
The party gathers to decide what to
do about Kareem.
This discussion becomes one of the
session’s key ideological fault lines.
- Tariq
focuses on relic recovery and preventing dangerous objects from falling
into the wrong hands.
- Rana
cares very little about the artifacts themselves. Her concern is the
safety of the residents and the removal of a violent criminal faction from
the Veil.
- David
questions the entire mission structure. He presses the group to ask
whether they are acting on their own values or simply serving Naguib
Sawiris’s hidden agenda.
- Yusuf
frames the problem tactically: gather intelligence first, then strike with
intent.
Despite the philosophical
differences, one point becomes clear:
If they enter the maintenance sector
openly, violence is almost certain.
If they do nothing, Kareem’s operation continues.
So they scout first.
11.
David and Yusuf Reconnoiter the Maintenance Bay
David using Detect magic and Yusuf using X-Ray vision approach the
maintenance sector invisibly, with Rana boosting David’s dexterity and Tariq
bolstering the team with psychic inspiration.
The infiltration yields a clear
picture.

something beneath the Veil.

Once inside, the true scale of the

Kareem’s people are not just
stockpiling stolen goods. They are running a systematic sorting and
processing center.
- Clausius technology

- magical artifacts
- containment cases
- trucks prepped for shipment
The non-magical goods are being sorted for resale. The magical items are handled separately.
And four powered
individuals—including Kareem—work in practiced coordination to identify,
stabilize, contain, and package dangerous relics into hardened transport cases.
The party realizes they are looking
at a functioning artifact pipeline.
This is not scavenging. It is logistics.
12.
Evidence of a Chamber Beneath the Veil
The reconnaissance also confirms a
second secret.
Kareem’s people are not only
processing artifacts. They are excavating for something beneath the campus.
When Yusuf looks downward, he detects a large section of subsurface area
obscured from X-ray vision by some blocking material.
Kareem later confirms, reluctantly,
that his people believe there is a chamber beneath the Veil.
That possibility reframes the entire
location yet again. The Clausius engine, the criminal operation, the excavation
tools, the persistent nighttime work in tents near the pavilion—none of it may
have been merely opportunistic. Kareem is not just exploiting the Veil.
He may be hunting something buried
under it.
13.
Rana Confronts Tariq
While David and Yusuf scout the
maintenance bay, Rana forces the issue that has been building all morning.
She confronts Tariq directly and
privately.
This is one of the most important
conversations in the campaign so far.
Rana’s argument is devastatingly
simple:
- Tariq claimed he was only trying to perceive through
Yusuf during the previous encounter
- But his powers do not work that way
- Meaning he attempted something beyond the consent he
was given
- Meaning he exercised agency during the event he keeps
attributing entirely to the Master
From there, her logic widens.
The Master has only ever acted
through Tariq.
No one else has shown a power that exclusively affects one person.
If Tariq can manipulate minds, memories, and perceptions, then none of the
party’s shared history can be trusted.
Not the caped figure from their
earliest recollections.
Not the interpreted clues.
Not the paintings drawn from memory.
Not the mission itself.
Rana openly states that Tariq may
be:
- the Master
- in league with the Master
- controlled by the Master
- or some fractured duality that amounts to the same
threat
Tariq does not truly refute her.
He can only insist that he believes
himself an unwilling accomplice.
Rana is unconvinced. She also
extends her doubt to the rest of the group, especially Yusuf’s long service
under Naguib Sawiris. If Sawiris is compromised, then longstanding loyalty to
him may become a liability.
For the first time, Rana says
outright that she no longer trusts the group.
She then admits a second fear: bringing Tariq to Michael Adeyemi may have been a terrible mistake. If Tariq is compromised, then Michael—newly restored and vulnerable—may already be in danger simply by proximity.
Tariq responds by offering a concession: he will not go near Michael again and will leave whatever Michael reveals to the others alone. It is not enough to repair trust. But it is enough to keep the group moving for now.
14.
The Party Chooses Immediate Assault
After the reconnaissance report
comes in, the decision is made quickly.
The enemy is:
- organized
- experienced
- unexpectedly disciplined
- but not expecting attack
The party decides not to wait for
nightfall. Delay would only give Kareem more time to process and move
artifacts—or advance whatever excavation is underway.
They strike now.
David and Yusuf, already in
position, maintain eyes on the interior while the others prepare to teleport
directly into the center of the operation.
15.
The Battle in the Maintenance Bay
The assault begins with sudden
violence.
The party teleports into the
warehouse and attacks before Kareem’s crew fully understands what is happening.

capable of lifting and throwing vehicles
They also appear to be empowered by
magical accoutrements:

When working together, their powers
overlap in ways that strengthen their containment and defensive capacity.

The party realizes the four powered
opponents were not merely standing together—they had been forming a combined
processing shield around magical items. Once combat begins and they separate,
those defenses weaken, allowing the heroes to attack them individually more
effectively.
16.
Key Combat Moments
Several moments define the fight and
establish the rhythm of the party in combat.
Yusuf’s
Second Kill
Yusuf’s eye-blast vaporizes one of
the armed criminals in an instant. The display is so overwhelming that many of
the ordinary workers and support personnel immediately begin fleeing the
building.
David
Disrupts Layla
David lands a mystic blast on the
female amplifier, Layla, injuring and stunning her badly enough to break the
enemy’s formation.
Yusuf
Grapples Layla
Taking advantage of the opening,
Yusuf seizes Layla physically before she can recover.
Rana
Tests Kareem and Takes the Counterblow
Rana attempts to use her draining
touch on Kareem and discovers that contacting him is like striking static-filled
force. Moments later Kareem retaliates indirectly by increasing gravity around
her position, crushing the vehicle she is using for cover and pinning her in a
localized field of increased weight.
The
Telekinetic Removes Cover
The heavy combatant lifts and hurls
vehicles to strip away the heroes’ defensive positions, changing the shape of
the battlefield in real time.
Rana’s
Truck Slam
After escaping the gravity field,
Rana seizes the same truck that had just been moved and slams it down onto
Layla, pinning and injuring her. It is one of the most visually striking
moments of the session and shifts the battle firmly in the party’s favor.
Kareem’s
Shockwave
Kareem drives his power into the
ground, sending out a heavy shockwave that knocks some of the party off their
feet and bruises others. Even then, the team keeps momentum.
Tariq
Finally Breaks Kareem
After several failed attempts, Tariq
lands a successful mind blast on Kareem, leaving him stunned, bruised, and
vulnerable.
David
Follows Through
David immediately capitalizes,
hitting Kareem with a mystic blast while he is exposed. The attack piles on
damage and effectively collapses Kareem’s resistance.
17.
The Fight Ends in Confusion, Not Slaughter
As the powered defenders begin to
break, Rana calls for surrender.
Unexpectedly, it works.
The remaining active opponents
hesitate, disoriented by the sudden escalation and the fact that they are being
overwhelmed by superhuman attackers who appeared out of nowhere. Layla escapes
by dimensional stepping away from immediate danger, but the others cease
organized resistance.
The ordinary workers are already
fleeing. The gunmen are in no condition to reengage. Kareem, coming out of
psychic shock, realizes his side has lost.
The party drops out of initiative
and transitions into terms.
18.
Kareem Accepts Exile
In the aftermath, Kareem and the
surviving powered members agree to leave.
The party’s demands are simple:
- the operation ends
- the maintenance sector is abandoned
- the crew departs the Veil
- the cargo and stored materials remain behind
Rana makes clear that the primary
issue is not abstract crime but the threat Kareem’s presence poses to the
residents of the Veil. Tariq asserts a claim over the stolen operation and its
contents. David insists that production stops immediately and that the party
secures the site before anything else moves.
Kareem bargains only lightly. He
asks to leave with the personal magical items already on their bodies and
retrieve belongings from their rooms. The party allows it, but strips them of
communication gear and gives them limited conditions for departure.
Before leaving, Kareem reveals two
important facts:
- The vehicles they have been using are all keyed to the
same off-site destination
- The more carefully handled magical items are stored in
an old military bunker or silo outside the city
He also confirms—evasively at first, then more honestly—that his people believe there is a chamber beneath the Veil and that the excavation tools were being used in the courtyard as part of that search. By session’s close, Kareem’s group is leaving to collect their things and abandon the campus.
The maintenance bay—and everything
inside it—now belongs to the party.

By the end of Session Nine, the Veil
stands transformed again.
What began as a refuge for survivors
has been exposed as something layered and unstable:
- a former recovery campus
- a covert pre-storm cover site
- a divided post-storm enclave
- a relic trafficking hub
- and possibly a site built atop something buried and
powerful
Kareem Haddad’s operation has been
dismantled. His crew is leaving. The party now controls a significant cache of
stolen magical artifacts, access to a linked off-site storage bunker, and the
first real lead toward a hidden chamber beneath the Veil.
But the greatest fracture in the
session is not geographic.
It is personal.
Rana’s confrontation with Tariq
destroys the assumption that the group’s shared memory can be trusted. If Tariq
can manipulate minds, if the Master acts only through him, and if the evidence
guiding them has passed through his influence at every stage, then the
foundation of the party’s alliance has become unstable.
They have won a tactical victory. They may have lost the ability to believe in each other.
Session Nine closes not with peace,
but with suspended consequences:
- Michael Adeyemi has returned, but has not yet spoken
- the recovered artifacts now require sorting and
judgment
- an underground chamber may lie beneath the Veil
- Kareem’s off-site bunker waits to be explored
- and the party, for the first time, is openly divided by
fear, suspicion, and doubt
They defeated one enemy in the
maintenance bay.
The next enemy may be memory itself.
