Michael learns that influence can travel through a remote connection. Luca eats like a starving engine trying to rebuild itself. Sawiris continues shielding the party from the worst of the Master’s influence, but every act of resistance costs him.

By the middle of the day, the session becomes a study in pressure. Rana’s place in the company is debated openly, and the board begins turning her public miracle into legal, ethical, and political policy. Blackstone questions her directly about the resurrection broadcast. Naomi channels the fears of the public. Rana clarifies the boundaries of her power and the difference between moral action and corporate performance. The company decides, officially, to treat her as a person.

The second half of the session pulls the mask further away. The party realizes that Luca is not merely muscle, but a broken receptacle for the Master. Tariq’s use of the Rod of Command shakes several board members loose from suggestion. Rana strengthens Sawiris’ will. The Story So Far

After the first day of the emergency board meeting, the party secured the Rana Protocol, received Sawiris’ hidden cry for help, and learned that the board itself could be bent through magical suggestion. Naomi Brooks collapsed when the control effect forced her cybernetic mind into reboot, and the group began to understand that Sawiris was not simply an enemy or host, but a man resisting an intelligence that knows his true name.

Session Sixteen follows the second day of that meeting. The party now knows the room is compromised. The question is no longer whether the system is being manipulated, but how much of it can still be salvaged before the Master notices every act of resistance.

1. Morning — Recovery, Research, and Medical Files

The session opens with the party waking at the Alexandria Research Institute while Michael remains safely at the High House, working remotely with Omotola Adewale from Cairo University. Naomi is awake and feeling better after the previous day’s collapse. The group performs their now-familiar morning routines, checking over their items and reconnecting with them in small rituals that are becoming part of life after the Storm.

At breakfast, the medical side of the Institute reasserts itself. A lab assistant, clearly nervous, asks for the group’s USB medical files so Dr. Kovacs can update them with new information from the previous day’s tests. Tariq reads the assistant’s surface thoughts and learns that the man is frightened of the party and irritated at being sent to approach them. The request is legitimate, but the mood has changed. The party is no longer just being studied. They are being handled carefully.

Michael’s research also begins moving. Omotola has already prepared material for him to review, keeping his separate investigation alive while he remains away from the meeting itself.

2. Breakfast — The Influence Reaches Through Screens

Naguib Sawiris enters breakfast with Marcus Blackstone and Luca. The familiar wave of mental influence follows. This time, the party makes the necessary saves without the Fortitude drain, and Sawiris again appears to be doing what he can to blunt the worst of the effect for them.

Michael, observing remotely, feels the influence through the browser connection and closes it. He realizes that the lawyers visible through the remote link have failed their saves. 3. Luca Eats

Luca is different this morning.

The violence is still there, but he is not trembling with it the way he was the day before. Instead, he eats. Not like a man. Like something trying to refill an emptied furnace. He takes whole trays of eggs, bacon, sausage, toast, coffee, and juice. His broken body makes the act grotesque and difficult. Food spills. Some bounces off hardened or damaged flesh. The sight is not comic, even when the table tries to survive it with jokes.

Tariq approaches Sawiris with a small observation, suggesting that perhaps Luca’s food might be prepared differently. Blackstone does not attack her. He asks the question that has been hanging over the company since the Arbiter Event: what did she think would happen after resurrecting people on television?

Rana answers directly. She believed visibility would protect her. People like her and other storm-touched members of the board were already being hunted. Her thought was that putting herself in the spotlight would force those hunters to back away. She did not anticipate the geopolitical escalation.

Blackstone then asks whether the board will be consulted before future acts of that magnitude, not because resurrection itself is a business decision, but because public displays now affect the company. Rana draws a hard boundary. Bringing someone back is not a corporate act and will not be decided by profit, loss, or optics. But she also states that she does not intend to perform resurrection as a public display again.

That answer visibly relieves the room.

7. Ahmad Farouk and the Limits of Resurrection

The discussion turns to Ahmad Farouk. Tariq asks whether Rana can bring him back. Rana explains the rules as she understands them. She needs the body. She cannot raise someone from across the country. There is a seven-week limit. And most importantly, the dead person must want to return.

Sawiris confirms that he has not pursued body recovery because he did not presume Rana would attempt such a thing. If Ahmad’s body is in Cairo, Rana would have to go there or have the body brought to her. The precise date of death remains to be confirmed, though May 22 is suggested.

Rana says that if the body is available and the time limit has not passed, she is willing to try.

The conversation then exposes a legal gap. Rana suggests that if Ahmad is restored, he should be recognized as a board member if he can verify his identity. Blackstone answers that the contracts are specific. 10. Tariq Raises the Rod

Tariq spends a hero point and uses the Rod of Command to inspire those present during the break. The act is pharaonic, public, and powerful. It gives those affected a chance to shake loose from the mental control.

Several board members jolt awake into confusion. Mei Lin and Naomi appear freed from the suggestion. Sawiris immediately reddens and begins to sweat. The room shifts from passive control to dangerous awareness.

Rana moves to Sawiris. Rather than condemn him, she tells him that now that the vote on her is done, she does not blame him for what happened. She does not hold him accountable for the Storm or for what has been done through him. She extends her hand.

Those who have shaken free begin asking procedural questions. Some of it is legitimate. Some of it is stalling. They know something was wrong, even if they do not fully understand what.

The discussion expands into board architecture. Future stock sales will create new pools of influence and possible international representatives. Sawiris also proposes that one medical professional from the facility be granted stock and brought into the structure, with him personally funding the stock as a bonus. 12. Lunch — Mei Lin’s Protection and Layla’s Questions

At lunch, Luca is already eating in the cafeteria and has apparently been doing so since the board left. When the others arrive, he leaves.

Naomi and Mei Lin sit with the group and strongly suggest not discussing board matters. The emphasis is deliberate. They want confirmation of what has been happening without saying it outright. David answers carefully, confirming that it was good to have a break from that stress.

Tariq then approaches Layla Kareem. Their conversation begins with her teasing him as the “unknown pharaoh” and quickly turns to archaeology. Tariq explains that archaeology is not a hobby to him, even if his wealth has given him access others never had.

Layla asks whether Tariq arranged for her to be on the plane. He says that to his knowledge it was a lottery, though if anyone had agency, he looks toward Sawiris. Layla says she will never believe they were chosen randomly.

Then she asks for help with her powers.

13. Dr. Kovacs and the Storm-Touched Chromosome

During lunch, Yusuf goes to Dr. Mirela Kovács to work on refining his eye blast. He wants more control, something less blunt than a blast.

Kovacs is reviewing his medical file when he arrives. She describes his abilities in clinical terms, not superhero language. Then she shows him a DNA strand and identifies a new or additional chromosome present in the storm-touched individuals she has studied. She does not know what it means. Yusuf realizes that Dr. Kovacs is telling him this information before anyone else.

The discovery immediately raises the danger of language. The party later pushes back hard against any idea that this makes them “not human.” If they are classified as something other than human, then the protections of human law can be taken from them. The science is new. The politics are already lethal.

Kovacs agrees to help Yusuf develop a methodical process to refine his eye blast.

14. Afternoon — The Drain and the Master

Blackstone, terrified but relieved to be asked something grounded in law and finance, gives a detailed explanation of how .Thoth has been conservative with its wealth, using resources to stabilize global systems rather than exploit the crisis.

The motion to establish the financial framework passes. When Rana speaks of .Thoth’s leadership, the Master briefly seems pleased and says perhaps he misjudged David. Then the presence fades.

Sawiris is left exhausted.

15. Adjournment and the Next Threat

The party recognizes that Sawiris cannot continue. David gives him the dignity of ending the meeting rather than pressing him further. The board adjourns after completing item six. Luca helps Sawiris out.

Back in the suites, the party immediately focuses on the danger ahead. Rana is especially concerned about the executive committee authority expansion. If that passes while the board is under control, and if she and David remain outside the executive structure, then the company could be governed by a small group where Sawiris and Blackstone hold too much concentrated power.

The group discusses whether virtue might help shield Sawiris, whether the Master/Apep/Tiamat are the same or separate entities, and whether coded communication through AI might allow them to send Sawiris guidance the way he sent them the hidden insert.

Nothing is settled. But the next day’s agenda becomes urgent.

After the meeting, Tariq goes to Layla’s suite. She asks whether he always feels tired at the Institute and wonders if they are being drugged. Tariq tells her he believes they are under constant mental attack by whatever is controlling Sawiris. Because she is still affected, she cannot fully accept the severity of that claim.
