The Races of Westeros
The First Men were the culture of humans who first set foot on the continent. The influence of the First Men is still felt in Westeros, most strongly in the north. The First Men were a Stone Age people who had a basic form of runic writing system, buried their dead, and would later adopt the pagan gods from the children of the forest. The First Men are the dominate human race in the North, it is not uncommon however to find folk of First Men descent elsewhere. Referring to the First Men invokes the an Old World or First World connotation to the subject.
The Andals are one of the three major ethnic groups from which the humans of Westeros descend, the others being the First Men and the Rhoynar. The Andal invasion caused the fall of many of the kingdoms of the First Men which had developed in the wake of the Pact with the children of the forest. The Andals also brought the Faith of the Seven to the Seven Kingdoms. The Lord of the Seven Kingdoms, the king on the Iron Throne, claims to be the King of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men. The Rhoynar were a culture of river-faring people who dwelt
on the banks of the immense river Rhoyne in Essos. After
being forced to flee in ten thousand ships during the Rhoynish
Wars with Valyria, the surviving Rhoynar eventually settled in Dorne in
southern Westeros. While most Rhoynar integrated into Dornish society, the ‘orphans of the Greenblood’ have
retained their Rhoynish heritage and language.
The Free Folk are a race of people who live beyond the Wall. They are more
commonly referred to as "wildlings" everywhere south of the Wall.
The Small Folk despite being of smaller stature, these lowborn are the common people of the known world. Most are peasants who have to obey their local lord, even though they may never catch a glimpse of him during their life. The nobility of Westeros have great power over their smallfolk, whom they are expected to protect.
The Children of the Forest are all but vanished from the world, collectively they are the fey, tree-folk and witches from the old world who’s numbers total less than one hundred.
Asherati are a geographically established people who live below the sands and dusts of Dorne, rising to the surface to hunt for food, socialize and trade, and make war upon their enemies. As merfolk are to the sea, asheratis are to the sands.
