White Harbor

Traveler's Guide

White Harbor is a modest-sized city of the North and serves as its principle port. House Manderly rules the city and the lands around it. From White Harbor, one can take a barge up the White Knife, almost as far as Winterfell. Located on the eastern shore of the White Knife just before it’s head waters flow into the Bite White Harbor is clean and well-ordered, with wide straight cobbled streets that make it easy to walk around. The houses are built of whitewashed stone, with steeply-pitched roofs of dark grey slate. 

White Harbor contains New Castle, the seat of House Manderly and is the largest settlement north of the Neck, but the smallest among the five major cities of Westeros. 

Due to its location White Harbor has more contact with the south and there are more knights and followers of the Faith of the Seven in White Harbor than anywhere else in the north. There are some followers of the old gods, but most follow the Faith. The city has access to good fishing grounds for whaling and lamprey; cultivation of naturally growing Merfolk's Comb; and is also the home of many silversmiths, alchemists, and craftsmen.

Locations of note: 

Seal Rock is a massive stone dominating the approaches to the Outer Harbor. It is crowned with a ringfort of weathered stones built by the First Men that stood desolate and abandoned for centuries. However, the Manderlys fortify it with crossbowmen, scorpions, and spitfires. The stone looms fifty feet above the waters, grey-green in color. Seals often rest on it while magical Merfolk's Comb grow under the waters. 

The harbor is divided into the inner and outer harbors. The outer harbor is larger, but the inner harbor offers better anchorage and shelter by the city wall on the south side and the looming mass of the Wolf's Den on the north. A mile-long, thirty foot wall, with towers every hundred yards, is located on the jetty that separates the two harbors

New Castle: is the seat of House Manderly centrally located it is also called the New Keep, it is reminiscent of Dunstonbury, the Manderlys' castle from when they lived in the Reach. New Castle has all the components of a walled holdfast of its kind including one of the three Septs of the Church of Seven in White Harbor as well as an aviary for giant eagles and dire ravens. Even the great dragon Balerion had used the aviary when Aegon the Conqueror came to White Harbor to accept terms of surrender from northern houses. 

Wolf's Den: also called The Den is an ancient castle in White Harbor that now serves as a penitentiary. One of the first keeps in the north it has crumbling black walls which loom large over houses that huddle against them. 

Wolf's Den contains an ancient godswood with a weirwood heart tree so large its limbs pass through courtyard walls and windows. A lighthouse and fog horn is manned and sees regular use. With the exception of a few individuals the Wolf's Den is mostly staffed by members of House Ironsmith, a dwarf clan of the north:

Warden Bartimus Ironsmith, called the "old knight," castellan of the Wolf's Den and Ironsmith patron. 
Javor Ironsmith, the young master of keys and responsible for the foghorn. He is Ser Bartimus' adventurous 15 year old son. He is just starting to get his beard. 
Avarice Ironsmith, Javor's mother and Bartimus' beautiful dwarven wife, she is the prison lamplighter and lighthouse caretaker. She is has the 'Luck of the Dwarves" or nine-lives depending on what you believe. 

Tesh, Averice's jealous sister, former city guide who is not as lucky as Averice, she works the the Wolf's den as a washer woman. 

Taric "Cookie" Ironsmith, dwarven cook and Bartimus' grossly obese and cowardly cousin. Obviously infatuated with Tesh.

Tomen Manderly Wolf's Den administrator. He knows his job is largely unimportant but feels if he could do a good job at the Wolf's Den, he could be elevated in the family. 

Members of the Night's Watch, the Night's Watch will make yearly visits to prisons and the like looking for criminals who are able and willing can serve out their sentence by taking the black- swearing the oath and join the Night's watch for the rest of their days. One of them is sickly with the greyscale disease and quarantined.

Sept of the Snows: or Snowy Sept is the largest of the three septs in White Harbor with a domed roof surmounted by tall statues of the Seven. Most Devout Holcomb is the High Priest in White Harbor. A recent Church edict states that magic which does not originate from god, and by extension the Church, is tainted and is wrought with dark consequences. 

Merman's Court: is the great hall of the New Castle, the seat of House Manderly, where the Lords of White Harbor hold court and feasts. It is common to see various House banners hanging in plain view over Merman's Court indicating visiting heads of houses or their designee.

Fishfoot Yard: is a large cobbled square in White Harbor located just inside the Seal Gate with a fountain of Old Fishfoot at its center. It is the primary open market that is heavily watched over by tax collectors and custom agents from House Manderly. Sheltershrubs are carefully tended to by Speakers who know the secrets to gardening the magical plant.

Alyn Velaryon

Alyn Velaryon, born Alyn of Hull and later called Alyn Oakenfist, was Lord of the Tides, Master of Driftmark and head of House Velaryon. Alyn was a legitimized bastard of dragonseed descent, coming from Hull on the island of Driftmark. 

An admiral during the reigns of Aegon III Targaryen and Master of Ships for Daeron I Targaryen, Alyn participated in the Dance of the Dragons, the Daughters' War, and most recently the conquest of Dorne.

He commands four ships including his flag ship the Black Dread. 

In Sunspear Alyn Velaryon and the Night Queen were seen boarding the Black Dread the night of the New Moon after the creation of the Shadow Touchstone sailing into the night with the warships Meraxes' Revenge and The Spectre as escorts. 

The Black Dread

Named after the Great dragon Balerion who earned the name 'the Black Dread' because of his all black coloration and his deadly blackfire breath. Balerion was King Aegon I Targaryen's personal dragon during his conquest of Westeros whos legendary breath would eventually forge the coveted Iron Throne from ten thousand yielded swords.  

Meraxes' Revenge, The Queen's Gambit, and The Spectre

Meraxes's Revenge was so named for the Conquest of Dorne in honor of Queen Rhaenys Targaryen's personal dragon Meraxes who was shot down over Hellholt in Dorne during Aegon's Conquest. (*shot down with Mon's ancestral spear functioning as a scorpion bolt.) 

The Queen's Gambit is a captured warship once belonging to Commodore Charres Wells, commander of the Royal Dornish Navy. Charress Wells has not been seen since. 

It is believed the Queen's Gambit sailed the archeologist vampire spawn Desmore Vaith from Vaith to the Red Waste is Essos to destroy the Cradle (fire touchstone). 

The Spectre it is said, only appears at night and is seemingly crewed by flying folk, and creatures of shadow with eyes that glow with a darklight.

Winterfell and the North

Cregan Stark, also known as the Old Man of the North, was a stern and formidable Lord and like many Starks, Cregan was a good friend of the Night's Watch. Cregan went on to sire many issue during his time in Winterfell; among them Rickon and Barthogan. Two sons that would vie for position as Warden the North their entire lives. 

Rickon Stark is the firstborn son of Lord Cregan Stark who named Rickon after his father and Lady Arra Norrey who died giving birth to him. Rickon Stark was handsome and well spoken, while he was a not a pacifist Rickon relied on diplomacy before bloodshed. Rickon, as well as his nephew Eddard was conscripted into King Dearon Targaryen's Conquest of Dorne last year and according to Will Manderly Rickon was betrayed and killed by Eddard. Rickon sired a son named Boren and a daughter from a second union named Luna. 

Barthogan Stark, or 'Barth Blacksword' is strong, tall, aggressive, territorial man who holds to ancient northern rites, who regularly speaks words to Gaia and often proclaims he would 'never kneel to an enemy'. Ten years ago Barthogan suffered a crippling injury as a result of the Incident but that only fueled his ceaseless campaign against Rickon's side of the family as well as his leadership as Warden of the North. Not to mention Boren's rite to Lord of Winterfell. Barthogan has three adult offspring- Eddard Stark, Barthogan II, and Sansa Stark. 

Barthogan "Blacksword" Stark

Additionally, Barthogan won popularity days after the Autumn equinox when he rose up against actions of the Church of the Seven when they violated ancient guest rights. Since that time war has raged between the Starks and the Church of Seven which see themselves on a righteous crusade. Barth Blacksword has the support of House Cerwyn and House Flint of Flint's Finger while the Church boasts House Manderly and House Locke as their greatest supporters in bringing organized religion to the northern heathens. 

Eddard "the Hyena" Stark

Eddard Stark, 37 years old, is book smart but void of social graces; bombastic and prone to outbursts. He has a hyena-like laugh that earned him his nickname. He returned to Winterfell at the Autumn equinox ahead of the death carriage that carried Rickon Stark's body from Sunspear giving the Blacksword Starks time to position themselves in Winterfell leadership. 

Barthogan II "Barth the Lesser" Stark

Barthogan II, 43 years old, is his father's weapon's expert, armorer, executioner and enforcer which earned him the moniker "Barth the Lesser." Not encumbered with an abundance of intelligence, he is nonetheless adept as Winterfell's military commander during the conflict against the Church of Seven. In contrast to his scarred and unshaven exterior Barth the Lesser has an amazing singing capability. 

Sansa "the White Wolf" Stark

Sansa Stark, 29 years old, is as beautiful as she is cunning and evil. Former student of Maester Oghan she is a shadowcaster witch in the service of the Night Queen. Sansa is a manipulator and knows how to use people like pawns on a chess board. She blames Boren for the Incident that crippled her father and stole away the attentions of her mentor Maester Oghan leaving her to look elsewhere for guidance and education. 

Luna Stark

Luna Star is Boren's innocent half sister whom he has not seen since the Incident ten years ago. Since that time she has been in White Harbor in the care of her mother's family House Manderly and the clergy of the Church of Seven. It is believed Sansa Stark found Luna and intended on rescuing her from House Manderly and bring her to Winterfell. 

Luna has exchanged messages with Boren Stark: 

While in High Hermitage after receiving a message of warning from her brother: 

"I am glad you are alive. There is fighting in the North. I am in White Harbor safe with Acolytes of the Faith." Luna.  

While in Sandstone: 

"Brother, the church wants me to speak in their favor to all the Stark bannermen and persuade them to unite with the church against Winterfell." Luna. 

A few days later:

"Brother, Sansa found me in my dreams will bring me Home. Sansa says she has plans for me. Oh and meet my new owl Zelda." Luna. 

Carth Manderly

Carth is a former Faith acolyte excommunicated from the Church of Seven after receiving forbidden life saving magic from the Wood Woman. This magic saved him from certain death caused by the dustblight disease he contracted while in Dorne fighting along side Rickon Stark and supporting the King's conquest of Dorne. All who know him state he is a good man. 

He has recently reached out to Boren Stark:

Corban "Blackbar" Stark 

Maester Corban “Blackbar” Stark serves as Winterfell's chief steward and seneschal; Corban takes care of the library, the estate and household administration including the events in the Great Hall. He earned his nickname from the black staff he carries as a symbol of the office he holds. Maester Corban is mute; nevertheless it is said he often has very public disagreements with the Chamberlain.

Koryn "Pathfinder" from House Glover

Koryn ‘Pathfinder’ Glover is an intermediate ranking ranger of the frigid north from Deepwood Motte. She was one of Boren Stark's closest childhood friends. Together with Callisto and Roberd Hornwood they would range the Kingsroad hunting dire bison and other creatures. Boren has not seen her since the beginning of King Daeron's Conquest of Dorne. 

Roberd Hornwood "Knight of Ponds" 

Roberd Hornwood, the ‘Knight of Ponds’ was Winterfell's watch captain charged with supervising the house guard shifts and who communicates commands with the Stark’s bannermen in times of conflict. Roberd was one of Boren Stark's true childhood friends. Together with Koryn and Callisto they would range the Kingsroad hunting dire bison and snow cats. Boren has not seen Roberd since the beginning of King Daeron's Conquest of Dorne. 

Callisto

Callisto is an urskan, a race of intelligent tundra bears, and another one of Boren Stark's true childhood friends. Met ten years ago in the Wolfswood just prior to the Incident and Boren's awakening. Callisto seldom entered Winterfell and whenever possible would range the Kingsroad with Boren, Koryn and Roberd hunting dire bison, sinister frost folk, and snow cats. Boren has not seen Callisto since the Skagosi raids.

House Umber is a dwarven House that was hit hard by the Skagosi raids along the Bay of Seals last year. Warfare with the barbarians while territory is slowly yielding to the expanding frostfell from the Wall. A phenomenon occurring for the past ten years (since the Incident). What little resources remain for House Umber are for the defense of the Last Hearth against the holy crusaders of the Church of Seven as well as opportunist scoundrels from House Bolton.

House Karstark was hit hard by the Skagosi raids along the Bay of Seals last year. What little resources remain are for the defense of Karhold against the holy crusaders of the Church of Seven as well ass opportunist scoundrels from House Bolton.

Croll Cerwyn "the Chamberlin" 

Croll Cerwyn is Winterfell's chief officer of the Stark household who is responsible for the First Keep as well as the Great Keep. A dark humored man with a calculating mind. He also oversees the administration of Stark resources and works closely with Sansa Stark as her mentor since the death of Maester Oghan.

The river Greenblood despite its name is not green, however it is lined with green palms, and exotic plants. Small farms and self-sustaining communities taper to the green foothills of the Tor north of the water flow. To the south the foliage yields to the savanna wildlands where wemic prides roam- then the Red Dunes. Hazards: chekryan (giant insects), black savanna leopards, dire tortoise, desert dinosaurs, and elementals.

Vaith is a relatively large desert frontier town of approximately 5,000 Dornish who live and toil off the Greenblood for their daily livelihoods whether by trade, farming or fishing. Vaith's population is known to swell to seven or ten thousand individuals during the rainy years. Vaith owes its riches to the magical salvation cactus and fishweed that naturally grow locally along the Greenbood. The town of Vaith has unfortunately fallen on very hard times; the dustblight has plagued the region for almost 20 years and last year the King's Master of Ships raided counties along the Greenblood stopping at Vaith long enough to nearly decimate all but three members of House Vaith itself looking for the archeologist Desmor Vaith.
